Handmade Wood Furniture - Vermont is the Place to Shop

Looking for authentic handmade wood furniture, made in the good 'ol USA? It's not so easy to find it anymore, is it? Most Americans think of North Carolina as the fine furniture capitol of the USA, but over the past 30 years, that has changed. The furniture companies we think of as being quintessentially American -- for example Thomasville, Broyhill, Ethan Allen and Lane -- no longer make much, if any furniture in the USA. Instead they outsource their furniture to factories in China, Vietnam and other third world countries.

Furniture aficionados will find Vermont furniture shopping to be quite a different experience than the routine trip to a neighborhood big box furniture store. Savvy customers are combining their furniture shopping with travel and tourism throughout Vermont's rural countryside. The autumn leaf-peeping season has become the time of choice to shop although visitors are welcomed year-round. To learn more about Vermont's handmade wood furniture, check out the Vermont Fine Furniture Festival, held in Woodstock every year during the last week of September. There you'll get an insider's view of how authentic fine wood furniture is made and why Vermont is truly the Fine Furniture Capitol of America.Vermont has traditionally been home to a vibrant cottage industry of artisans, working in all types of media, including native hardwoods. Furniture makers from all around the globe flock to Vermont to practice their craft in the Green Mountain state. A thriving community of woodworkers has developed, bringing together Vermont families who have practiced woodworking for many generations and newcomers who have brought new and different aspects of the craft to the area.

Fair news wood shows recovered: innovation in woodworking technology and supplies at shows bodes well for the industry

Technology, supplies and hardware were the focus for a trio of woodworking industry trade shows: last month's AWFS Fair in Las Vegas; and in Germany, Ligna in Hannover in May/June, and interzum in Cologne, at the end of May. The Association for Woodworking & Furniture Suppliers' AWFS Fair, while smaller in scale, offered a combined emphases of the German shows, with a first U.S. look at some technologies (i.e., laser edgebanding and vertical machining centers).

Ligna, which focuses on machinery, drew 90,000 visitors and 1,765 exhibitors; interzum, covering wood, furnishings materials and hardware, drew 52,400 visitors with 1,434 exhibitors. Attendance at both was about 13 percent ahead of 2009, when they were last held.Weinig showed off a new CNC machining center for routing solid wood bearing its logo, but developed and produced by Holz-Her, which it purchased last year. (The firm exhibited at AWFS under its new branding.) Weinig also highlighted new concepts for producing textured moulded parts in a consistent pattern in one pass. Weinig showed the textured process could be applied to MDF parts or solid wood.Ligna show managers say manufacturers of woodworking equipment and machinery have responded to current concerns such as environment issues, cost of raw materials and the 2009 downturn with innovations that deliver efficiencies and cost savings--such as stripped down CNC machinery that reduces cost of entry. This theme continued at AWFS Fair, where machinery on the floor included leaned-down, yet still very automated models.Another trend is flexibility. For some, it means having a machine that is capable of doing multiple functions with zero or minimal manual adjustments. Prime examples are five-axis routers, which Biesse, SCM and others noted are now being offered in entry-level models at greatly reduced prices. Biesse, for example introduced the Rover A S 1325, a five-axis router that can quickly be changed from flat panel nesting to five-axis routing of solid wood. The machine, which uses the same Biesse software of its nearly twice the price big brothers, can select from up to 10 tools.* Micro Fence: Plunge Base & Edge Guide Package* Graco Inc.: ProMix 2KE sprayer* SCM Group North America: Stefani ONE TOUCHAmong its many new offerings, SCM displayed the Morbidelli Universal HP, a CNC machining center with built-in contour edgebanding capability. It features a five-axis motor and new glue system that applies the glue directly to the profile of the panel. In addition to complex router and edgebanding capabilities, the machine features 26 independent drill spindles rapid tool change at 10 positions."Bioenergy has become an attractive component in the energy mix, and is a high-profile and critical issue," said Arno Urbanek, applications and sales engineer at Untha Shredding Technology. (It operates domestically in Hampton, NH.)In Germany, a huge array of promising innovations filled the 13 halls of Ligna and seven halls of interzum. "Many businesses sync their innovation cycles with Ligna," said Stephan Kuhne of show operator Deutsche Messe, with "breakthroughs unveiled here."Ligna HighlightsOn the surface finishing front, oblique sanding systems are now sized for small woodworking firms. Also, new halogen drying units that dramatically shorten curing times can even be used on mobile equipment.AWFS Fair, which hasn't yet released official attendance figures, was predicted to draw 19,000 to its show floor, set in two halls of the sprawling Las Vegas Convention Center. It also marked the return of several large capital equipment exhibitors who skipped the 2009 edition, including Stiles, Weinig and Biesse. "We were glad to be back," said Biesse president Federico Broccoli.* Planit Solutions: Stand Alone Screen-to-Machine CenterLigna exhibitors tackled two huge issues affecting wood products companies around the globe: they have reduced energy consumption and enhanced flexibility. Growing interest in bioenergy from wood comes as woodworkers discover the potential profit in selling woodwaste to use in fuel pellet production, or even install their own systems. It was a hot topic at Ligna.SCM and Delmac exhibited together for the first time since the acquisition of Delmac. Weinig and Holz-Her, also merged since the last AWFS, showed the Weinig Cabinet Door Cell comprised of the Powermat 1000 moulder, a Raimann KM moving blade ripsaw with a ValuRip III optimizing, infeed, a Dimter S-90 optimizing cross-cut saw, and a Holz-Her ProMaster CNC center all powered by Weinig's MillVision software.* Leitz Tooling Systems: Riplec Cutting SystemHomag expanded the ecoPlus concept that it introduced at Ligna 2009 among a limited line of its Holzma panel saws. One of the central components of ecoPlus is the standby function: the machine idles in standby mode and puts energy-consuming systems into hibernation.Biesse, Homag, SCM and Weinig--arguably the world's largest woodworking machinery makers--were among those that presented innovations geared to facilitate more energy-efficient and flexible factories at Ligna 2011.* Hardwoods Specialty Products: Red GrandisBiesse and Weinig, along with Holzma, touted the concept of producing residual energy when running the machine by switching from pneumatics to servo motors. Practically every type of machine can be made more energy efficient by as much as 35 percent, from edgebanders and panel saws to CNC routers and moulders.Lasers are making woodworking easier in many areas, marking planks and panels in cut optimization planning as well as assisting the actual cutting process. There are now four-sided planing machines that use lasers to project the spindle positions onto the workpiece for optimization, improving yield. At Ligna, Giben, best known for panel saws, showed LaserNest, a compact system that can cut extremely intricate parts at speeds up to 140 meters per minute. Mark Craig, Giben North America GM, suggested the possibility of a laser nesting system machining full sheets of MDFor particleboard, as they are now on CNC routers.Five-axis CNC technology, previously a high-end product, was shown in very small machines at Ligna, allowing for sophisticated machining projects. A growing number of multifunction machines are coming onto the market, some that can machine multiple workpieces at once.* Biesse America: Viet HP Sanding Pad* Oneida Air Systems: Smart Pro Dust CollectorBecoming more energy efficient addresses rising fuel and electrical costs, and also offers companies a way to become greener manufacturers, lowering the plants' carbon footprints.CNC machining systems are now much more affordable, and are also easy to use, even for beginners, thanks mainly to highly user-friendly software interfaces. A whole new generation of mini machining centers, as well as compact machining centers that have a footprint of less than 100 square feet, were on view at Ligna. (Along these lines, Stiles showed the Holzma Optimal vertical machining center at AWFS Fair.)Overall, exhibitors reported positive results at these shows. For example Homag Group, whose equipment is distributed by Stiles Machinery in the United States, said its Ligna orders were 20 percent ahead of 2007 levels; and 50 percent ahead of the depressed 2009 Ligna. In terms of sawing equipment, Ligna continued the trends toward more highly automated machines that can import and independently optimize cutting patterns. Even very small panel sizing saws now come with integrated cutting optimization software. Camera-assisted scoring saw positioning on horizontal panel saws was also shown.Along with its return to the North American trade show scene, Biesse America was among nine winners of the AWFS Fair Sequoia New Product Awards for creativity and innovation as well as leadership in green/environmental product development. The list of Sequoia winners includes:

Weinig showed off a new CNC machining center for routing solid wood bearing its logo, but developed and produced by Holz-Her, which it purchased last year. (The firm exhibited at AWFS under its new branding.) Weinig also highlighted new concepts for producing textured moulded parts in a consistent pattern in one pass. Which Bathroom Vanity Is For You?

Planning on remodeling your bathroom? Youll find out very quickly that one of your major decisions is the selection of a new vanity base and vanity top. Lets see what the choices are and which one is right for you.

Free-standing vanity bases allow you to be a little more adventurous in design. Unlike built-in vanity bases, they typically come complete with the vanity top. Because of this you get to evaluate the whole look before making a commitment to a particular style. Some free-standing bases look like fine furniture and use tops similar to the built-ins like granite or glass. The holes for the vessel and faucet are pre-drilled and ready for installation. The built-in vanity is a two stage process. First you choose the vanity base. Walk into any home remodeling center and you will find rows of stock vanity bases ready to take home, bolt against the wall, drop a vanity top in place and youre done. There are variations in style, including length, height, number and placement of doors and drawers, but thats about it. If you have an older, traditional home, this style is most likely your best choice.Steven Pollack is the owner of Bath Plus, an importer of exotic hardwood contemporary vanities. This line can be found at www.BathGems.comAn old adage in woodworking says to measure twice and cut once. When choosing a new vanity, take the time to browse the home remodeling stores to see the common offerings and search the internet if you are looking for something more expressive In other words, research much, choose once. Do that and you will wind up with a new bathroom to be proud of.ConclusionMuch of the problem with access to these built-ins comes from their name. You cannot move the base or countertop to get to the water lines. Depending on the exact set-up of your bathroom lines, it may not be that much of a problem but other times a complete re-reroute of the water supply line will be necessary to avoid a structural element of the cabinet. In a worst-case scenario, you could end up adding a number of very colorful epithets to your vocabulary as you pull the entire unit out for a mid-project supply line revision. As they say in the army, however, proper planning prevents poor performance.Another thing to consider, if youre planning on doing it yourself, is the relative difficulty of connecting the supply lines and drain. When it comes to modern sink and faucet installation, it has gotten simpler for do it yourselfers to make the necessary conections. The problem lies in access to the connecting points. With built-in vanity bases, as well as some of the fine furniture versions and the occasional free-standing ones, youre going to wind up with your head stuck in a cabinet, trying to thread a nut in a hard to reach area.Freestanding Vanities From Contemporary to EclecticFor those who lean toward modern dcor, or are remodeling the bathroom in a contemporary home, loft, high-rise condominium or upscale townhouse, a free-standing vanity will definitely appeal to your creativity due to a more unique range of available designs. These vanities also enhance the visual space of smaller bathrooms and powder rooms found in todays new construction. Also available are tops integrated with sinks as one piece, usually in interesting ceramic shapes or glass. Other vanities are a flat surface where you can use some of the avant-garde sinks (vessels) by mounting them on top of the solid stone or glass vanity top.Now that you have your vanity base selected, theres still something missingthe vanity top. Most of the time the vanity top will be made from cultured marble, ceramic or granite, and usually the sink (or basin or vessel, depending on the manufacturers description) will be an integral part of the top, forming a one-piece unit that will not leak. In some cases, a vanity top will have a cut-out (or cut-outs in the case of a double vanity) to allow the basin (or basins) to drop in.Built-In Vanities The Traditional ExperienceWhatever type of vanity top you choose from one of the big box suppliers, the tops that you can take with you are fairly limited and conventional in appearance and configuration. However, those retailers always have a wide selection of vanity tops from various manufacturers that can be custom ordered. Prices are reasonable and you can choose from a wide variety of sink shapes and placement in the top. If youre re-doing an older house or simply prefer a traditional built-in vanity, this is an excellent way to add a little pop to your bathroom while maintaining a traditional appearance. These vessel bowls are contemporary, artistic and sometimes exotic. They range all the way from tempered glass to antique hammered copper, cultured stone, real stone, and stainless steel. Some of them are designed to mount on top of the flat counter while others sit inside the vanity top with only a few inches of the vessel above the counter surface. In either case many leave exposed the supply lines and drain. If you enjoy being on the cutting edge, these types of vessels or sinks are made to order for you.Freestanding vanities eliminate the installation problems mentioned above because the open designs are easily accessible. The drain hardware is also designed to stay out in the open. P-trap drains, in particular, are very modern in design so you dont mind them being in plain view. There are two basic types of vanities, built-in and freestanding. Built-in is exactly what the name implies, a vanity base and solid countertop that installs against the wall and is designed to look like part of the structure. There is a third vanity alternative that deserves a brief mention. Namely, custom building a vanity base from scratch. This option provides the ultimate in flexibility (and is sometimes your only choice if you have an oddly shaped space) by allowing you to build from any kind of exotic hardwood. Think long and hard before taking this route, however, because it often takes an experienced woodworker with an ability to visualize in three-dimensions to make such a project successful. You can find everything from chrome pedestals that stand on the floor to cantilevered wall mounts that support the basin in mid-air. Prefer fine cabinetry? Common wood choices range from wenge (usually painted ultra dark brown, almost black) to oak. Exotic hardwoods become available from time to time such as sapele or zelkova. These rich grains are highly prized by custom furniture makers. Its even possible to find a free-standing vanity that looks and functions exactly like an antique chest of drawers.

Companies Unite in B.I.G. Showroom

NEW YORK

Since the companies involved were using the 2,298-sq.-ft. showroom to display their latest and greatest offerings, the design had to be exceptional, notes Lestorti. Since the kitchens took up the majority of the space and had to be designed first, Stephanie Martin, CKD, director of design and product development for Apple Valley Woodworks, stepped in. She was responsible for the majority of the kitchen design, while Lestorti brought some unique concepts to the space. The showroom's location, in the Flat Iron District of Manhattan, is home to showrooms for many major tile importers, making it a prime area for attracting designers, dealers and architects. The showroom is a showcase for products from four tri-state area companies: Yagerman & Co., Apple Valley Woodworks, Watermark Designs and Evans & Paul, an LG solid surface fabricator. "We don't do business as an entity or sell products there," reports Lou Lestorti, Jr., president, Apple Valley Woodworks in Southington, CT. "We're simply showcasing our products together in one venue."Each of the four companies uses the location as their showroom, bringing in existing and prospective dealers, as well as other clients, on an appointments-only basis. "For example, Apple Valley will bring in one of our dealers, and that person then gets exposed to the other products," explains Lestorti. "We're hoping for - and getting - a crosspollination of leads."The showroom was originally operated solely by Yagerman & Co., an importer of products such as vanities and wardrobes. When Yagerman, the president of the firm, went looking for a domestic supplier, he tapped Apple Valley Woodworks.Fhen David Yagerman contacted Apple Valley Woodworks about supplying products for his company, there was little indication that it would lead to a big idea. But, a year later, B.I.G. - Boutique Interior Group - is open for business.WORKING TOGETHER"There were other suppliers he worked with on a consistent basis, and we began having discussions on how to work together," states Lestorti. "It kind of morphed into the consortium idea -why don't we do a showroom with all of our products?""The first kitchen you see when you walk in the door has cabinets made out of acid-etched mirror," he reports. "It just blows you away when you walk in the door.""Overall, this is just a great way to market product," comments Lestorti. "I'm not sure that Apple Valley would have taken it upon itself to just do a showroom for our own use. But, the way we put this together, I'm totally excited about it."
