Five Year Self-Employment Plan - The No Hype Way Into Business

First, allow me to explain that this article isn't about a get rich scheme that's intended to draw you into a scenario of spending your hard earned money on something. This article is intended to highlight some experiences of how I was able to become self-employed and hopefully can pass on some suggestions to you. Perhaps, you may find these suggestions helpful in reaching a goal you choose, whether it be for a part-time or full-time business.

A study on rake and clearance angle, initiated by Harold (Sandy) Stewart for a USDA project at the North Central Forest Experiment Station, Carbondale, Ill., has been completed and is being analyzed by Stewart, now a senior research assistant at Mississippi Forest Products Laboratory, Mississippi State University. There are now nine applications for new patents using these types of materials, all a result of Stewart's research which created a need in the industry. The new carbide materials are also applicable to aerospace industry in epoxy graphite composites, non-ferrous metals such as copper and in mining.John Zinn, executive director of IWF, said, "This tool wear research has created more technical transference and more direct benefit to the industry in a shorter period of time than in any other government or IWF-sponsored project I have seen."Onsrud Cutter Inc. of Libertyville, Ill., won a Challengers Award in 1988 for its solid ceramic router bit which operates cool and claims a tool life three to 10 times longer than carbide.Again, my intention of this article wasn't to paint some pretty picture of you being able to be self-employed. There certainly are pros and cons in gaining some type of independence through self-employment. The point of this article is, if you want to be self-employed and don't expect things to drop into your lap, you can succeed if you work at it and give enough time for your business to grow. So, take your time and proceed towards a business if you desire. With a five year business plan, two things you might be able to avoid, one is developing burn out, and another is keeping yourself from taking out a huge bank loan and becoming financially in debt in the process of business development."Once the analysis is complete, we should be able to recommend a range of rake and clearance angles to increase tool life," said Stewart, who has been working on extended tool life solutions for a number of years. In addition, Stewart's research has led to a comparison of high speed steels for wood machining. "We found that heat treatment is as important as the type of steel that is used," Stewart says. "The industry has been recommending more abrasion resistant grades of steel, but our research proved that the steel itself is not the only problem. Certain grades of steel have been recommended for the wrong reasons. Now tool makers must look at heat treatment of the steel, which gives it its hardness and toughness."This realization led to a U.S. Forest Service-funded competitive grant which in turn led to a series of studies (in cooperation with Ohio State University) that presumed the main problem was chemical in nature. The follow-up research resulted in several tool manufacturing and tool material manufacturing companies changing their manufacturing procedures.Which type of adhesive is best for mosaics? It depends on your base material, mosaic method, whether youre working horizontally on a table or vertically on a wall, whether your mosaic is exposed to moisture, and personal preference.I also believe that having an independent nature within one's self is a key point to succeeding in business. I've always believed that if I had the know-how to do something, of course, also having the tools and means to do it with always helps, I could achieve a set goal I was after. This brings us to a brief story of how another person can effect and improve on your way to succeeding in business. I'm going to pass on a proven tip that a successful business man informed me about. Two times that I know of, this tip has worked for a retail furniture maker and myself. Both of us have that independent character and the willingness to succeed as a goal. Please bear with the following because there is an important point to make. For our indoor mosaic applications, do we really care if one brand is stronger than the other by a ga-zillion Pascals? (A Pascal is a unit of pressure equivalent to one Newton per square-meter.) I dont think so. For example, do we care that one brand might support the weight of two elephants while the other brand might support only one? Of course not. All we care about is if the glue can effectively hold a small piece of glass tessera that weighs less than an ounce to our base material without extreme external forces acting on it (e.g., forces such as walking on it or beating it with a hammer). So, in terms of strength, how do we choose whether to use Weldbond or Elmers for our simple, light-duty, indoor, mosaic art application? The answer is easy--perform our own unscientific experiment.

Again, my intention of this article wasn't to paint some pretty picture of you being able to be self-employed. There certainly are pros and cons in gaining some type of independence through self-employment. The point of this article is, if you want to be self-employed and don't expect things to drop into your lap, you can succeed if you work at it and give enough time for your business to grow.
